Once Upon a Lunar New Year

Panda Express, one of the largest Chinese-American restaurant chains in the US, invited us to celebrate stories that bring generations together, and we turned centuries-old legends into a colorful storybook adventure.
Blending motion graphics, hand-drawn animation, and 3D animation, we told the story of Lunar New Year through the eyes and words of a little girl, making Panda Express a meaningful part of the Lunar New Year celebration.

One Story, Two Worlds

The story lives in two worlds, so the visuals do too. The present unfolds in a blend of 3D environments and hand-drawn 2D animation, while the past leans into a more traditional 2D style inspired by Chinese folklore.

Culture in Every Frame

Telling the story of Lunar New Year meant staying true to the culture that inspired it. Every frame reflects Chinese American family traditions, while hiding playful nods to Panda Express for eagle-eyed viewers to discover – from the brand's signature red palette to hidden pandas. And because this is Panda Express, the food had to look just as craveable in animation as it does in real life.

Building the Family

The family feels unmistakably Chinese American without ever announcing it. Authenticity lives in the little things from the family's wardrobe to the customs and traditions of Lunar New Year.

Exploring the Legend

Inspired by traditional Chinese folklore and the visual language of children's storybooks, the story reimagines the mythical lion-like beast Nian through both hand-drawn illustration and traditional 2D animation, presenting the legendary creature in multiple visual styles.
