If someone is overdosing on opioids, having rescue medication and knowing how to use it can be the difference between life and death. Joining forces with fellow creative rebels, Moon Rabbits, we crafted an animated video on this deadly serious topic, with a sensitive balance of positive, playful visuals underpinned by an informative and relatable voiceover. In the event of an opioid overdose, it's important to have rescue medication ready and to know how to use it. In the event of an explainer video, it’s important to get people's attention and know how to keep it.
We leaned into bold collages: cut-out imagery, textures, and hand-drawn accents that bring life to a life-saving message. By including symbolism, we were able to emphasize the importance of time and medical accuracy without patronizing the viewers or drowning them in information.
Using OPVEE’s color palette gave a familiar and consistent feel, building trust from the very first frame. The use of green helped us highlight the key moments, signaling when to act, what to do, and how to ensure medical accuracy. And when it’s time to dig into the weeds, the backdrop shifts from fresh green to pale grey as the instructional segment begins.
Typography isn’t just picking Times New Roman or making sure all the LETTERZ l00k NICE!
It has a leading role in making complex issues accessible. By highlighting essential words on screen, we can ensure viewers effortlessly absorb the most important takeaways. But there’s a fine line between using playful aesthetics and delivering clarity! Grouping letters and words into cohesive styles makes the message pop—even in dense scenes—turning functional text into an expressive storytelling tool.
The storyboard’s minimalistic visual style made room for bold subtext that enhanced the voiceover. Collage animation amped up the energy, giving key moments more metaphorical impact, but it also meant thinking ahead. Every transition, every layered element had to be mapped out in advance, or we’d end up with jarring cuts, and clunky movements. It was like making the video before the video. Meanwhile, frame-by-frame animation added precision and emotional depth.
By blending both techniques, we ensured a smooth, cohesive flow that reinforced the story’s message. Every frame was carefully designed to reinforce symbolism while keeping the focus on action, not individuals.
This animation never stands still because life is always in motion. Its pulse-like rhythm reinforces the urgency of the message. Textures, patterns, and graphical details keep the energy flowing, ensuring every second holds attention (like a child’s gaze following a firework) while clever transitions between scenes intrigue and engage. These subtle details help sync the visuals with the animation’s heartbeat, keeping viewers locked in from start to finish.
